BIOMECHANICAL ASSESSMENT

WHAT IS A BIOMECHANICAL ASSESSMENT?

An assessment of the muscles, joints and bones of the lower limb and foot to identify abnormalities within these structures that may be contributing to pain and discomfort.

From this assessment, your podiatrist will be able to provide advice and/or treatments such as exercises, insoles, or footwear advice that may improve your symptoms.

Medical History

Your podiatrist will take a detailed medical history and enquire about your symptoms.

Please ensure you have provided an up-to-date list of your medication.

Range of Motion

Your podiatrist will assess the range of motion at the relevant joints.

Footwear

Your podiatrist will assess your footwear to establish if this is contributing to your symptoms.

Please bring a range of footwear you usually wear.

Postural Analysis

Your podiatrist will analyse your posture, including head tilt, neck position, shoulder tilt, pelvic tilt and leg length. It may be necessary to observe you walking.

Please wear appropriate clothing that can be rolled up to assess your lower leg.

Muscle Strength

Your podiatrist will assess the strength of appropriate muscles.

Podiatric Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

This ancient therapy stimulates the nerves in the skin, muscle, and other tissues, producing several beneficial effects. Primarily, it can trigger the release of your body's natural painkillers, such as endorphins and serotonin, within the spinal cord and brain pathways. This process modifies how your brain registers and processes pain signals.

In addition to its physical effects, acupuncture is thought to offer psychological benefits. Many people report an improved sense of well-being following treatment.

What Can Acupuncture Be Used for in Podiatry?

Acupuncture is an effective treatment for a variety of painful conditions, and is particularly well-established for addressing musculoskeletal pain.

In podiatry, it may be a suitable complementary therapy for conditions affecting the foot and lower limb, potentially including:

• Heel pain (e.g., plantar fasciitis)

• Achilles tendon pain

• Musculoskeletal pain in the foot and ankle

• Certain types of nerve pain or painful soft tissue issues

Is Acupuncture Suitable for You?

If you are experiencing pain in your feet or lower limbs, and are seeking a complementary approach to your podiatric care, acupuncture may be an option.

To determine if acupuncture is appropriate for your specific condition, we recommend booking a full assessment with one of our podiatrists. They will take a complete medical history, diagnose your condition, and discuss whether acupuncture, either alone or in conjunction with other treatments, could be a beneficial part of your personalised care plan.
